Description
Here at RFH Classics we are delighted to offer this striking and beautifully presented 1993 Mercedes-Benz SL300 (R129) finished in classic Artic White with contrasting factory Dark Blue Leather interior trim and a matching Blue Mohair Soft Top, which was professionally replaced in 2015. This car comes complete with the original factory supplied Artic White removable hardtop that fits and seals perfectly, making this a true year round classic. Externally the bodywork is exceptional and stands well above the traditional SL of this era being free from the usual corrosion or lacquer issues that often affect these cars.
The paintwork is both bright and consistent with the factory fit lower panels in the correct contrasting finish also presenting beautifully and correct to the original specification. The factory 16" alloy wheels are in excellent condition wearing correct 225/55 R16 tyres that have plenty of tread and no noticeable kerbing or damage. Inside, the deep Midnight Blue (262) leather interior is in excellent condition, with minimal wear and a well preserved cabin ambience that speaks to the car's careful previous ownership.
Behind the front seats are the optional rear seats that although an adult may struggle, could be ideal for smaller members of families. The walnut wood trim still has its original lustre and all the electrical functions including the power windows, mirrors, seat adjustments, auto climate control and the electrohydraulic power folding soft top operate flawlessly still and all adding to the sense of 1990s Mercedes-Benz quality and precision. Under the bonnet you find the robust 3.0-litre DOHC inline six engine from Mercedes' legendary M104 family, delivering a smooth and refined 228bhp through a 4 speed automatic gearbox.
This engine is renowned for its reliability and refinement, offering relaxed cruising with plenty of responsive performance providing a perfect combination for a luxury grand tourer of this calibre. It is rare to find an R129 SL that has been so consistently and conscientiously maintained as this one with the accompanying service history being among the finest we have seen on a car of this era. Originally supplied new to Mrs Goodman by Majestic Mercedes-Benz of Bournemouth, the SL received its first three services at the supplying dealer before routine servicing and maintenance was taken over by Evans Mercedes-Benz of Leicester up to 1996.
Servicing then passed to Vardy (Continental) Ltd of Cambridge, where it was maintained from 1996 until 2002. From 2002 Swavesey Garage, a respected Mercedes-Benz specialist undertakes the tradition of meticulous maintenance for her until 2004. The car changes hands in 2004 with the new owner Mr Sandham continuing to use the same garage, maintaining continuity and preserving the car's service record.
Swavesey Garage remained the chosen service centre for the next 13 years of his ownership and then continue all the servicing and maintenance for the car under its more recent custodians including the last registered keeper from who we purchased the vehicle. In total the accompanying original service book contains 10 Mercedes-Benz main dealer stamps and 6 further annual service from the independent specialist. All these records, including the most recent service carried out less than 300 miles ago in April 2025, are now chronologically arranged in one of our Service History folders complete with old MOTs and all invoices dating back over 30 years offering you a rare, but reassuring level of documentation that confirms the car's low mileage of just 86,740.
This is an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire an R129 SL300 that combines elegant colour specification, outstanding originality and a fully traceable service pedigree. If you've been waiting for a properly cared for SL that still feels genuinely special to drive, this one certainly warrants closer inspection. Why Buy a Used Mercedes-Benz SL?
The Mercedes-Benz SL has carved out a legendary reputation over decades, synonymous with grand touring comfort, potent power, and cutting-edge technology. Buying a used SL allows you to access this prestige and performance at a more attainable price point. It's a car that excels whether you're undertaking a leisurely cross-country drive or enjoying a spirited weekend blast. Each generation offers a unique interpretation of the SL's core values, ensuring there's a model to suit discerning drivers looking for both style and substance.
Popular Used Mercedes-Benz SL Models and Variants
The SL range boasts a rich history with several standout generations and variants that remain highly sought after:
- R230 (2002-2011): Introduced the folding hardtop, offering coupé-like security and convertible freedom. Popular engines include the SL 350, SL 500, and the high-performance SL 55 AMG and SL 63 AMG.
- R231 (2012-2020): Lighter and more agile thanks to its aluminium construction. This generation saw notable models like the SL 350 BlueEfficiency, SL 400, SL 500, and the potent SL 63 AMG.
- R129 (1989-2001): A more classic choice, known for its robust build quality and sophisticated automatic roof system. The SL 320 and SL 500 are common, with the SL 60 AMG being a rare performance variant.
Typical Used Mercedes-Benz SL Prices (UK 2025-2026)
Prices for used Mercedes-Benz SL models vary significantly based on generation, mileage, condition, and specification. Here's a general guide for the UK market:
| Model Generation | Typical Price Range (GBP) |
|---|---|
| R129 (older) | £6,000 - £15,000 |
| R230 | £8,000 - £25,000 |
| R231 | £20,000 - £50,000+ |
Note: Performance AMG models will command higher prices. Expect to pay a premium for lower mileage and pristine examples.
What to Look For When Buying a Used SL
When inspecting a used Mercedes-Benz SL, pay close attention to the following:
- Roof Mechanism: Thoroughly test the operation of the retractable hardtop (or soft-top on older models). Check for smooth operation, leaks, and any warning lights.
- Electrics: With many sophisticated electronic systems, ensure all features (infotainment, climate control, seats, windows) function correctly.
- Service History: A comprehensive service history, ideally from a Mercedes-Benz specialist or dealership, is crucial.
- Bodywork and Interior: Inspect for corrosion, especially around wheel arches and sills on older models. Check the leather interior for wear and tear.
- Engine and Gearbox: Listen for any unusual noises, check for smooth gear changes, and ensure the engine runs cleanly without smoke.
Running Costs for a Used Mercedes-Benz SL
Owning an SL is a premium experience, and running costs reflect this. Expect higher fuel consumption, especially with V8 and V12 engines. Insurance premiums can be substantial due to the car's value and performance. Servicing and replacement parts, particularly for older or more complex models, can be expensive, so budgeting for maintenance with a trusted specialist is advised.
Common Issues to Be Aware Of
While generally well-engineered, some common issues can arise with specific SL generations:
- R230: ABC suspension (Active Body Control) can be a costly repair if it fails. Earlier models might suffer from some electronics issues.
- R231: Generally more reliable, but still susceptible to high running costs and potential issues with the increasingly complex electronics.
- All Models: Regular maintenance is key. Neglected service schedules can lead to more significant problems over time.
