Motorcycle Specifications
Description
The 2021 MT-09 was the biggest change in the model's history, and the SP is the version you actually want. The 889cc CP3 triple produces 117bhp and 68lb-ft with a broader midrange and more top end than the 847cc bike it replaced, and it still has that crossplane triple character, part twin and part four, with a sound nothing else in the class matches. It will loft the front wheel on the throttle but it is far more composed than the earlier bikes when you just want to make progress.
The SP suspension is the headline. Fully adjustable KYB forks up front and a fully adjustable Öhlins rear shock, which transforms the bike over the standard model. It goes exactly where you point it, with a plushness and level of control the base bike cannot match, and it holds its line through fast transitions rather than running wide.
Braking is by Brembo with a radial master cylinder, and it runs Bridgestone S22s. The electronics are a full modern package. A six-axis IMU drives lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, wheelie control and cornering ABS, with four power modes, a bi-directional quickshifter and a 3.5 inch colour TFT dash.
The SP also adds cruise control, which the standard bike does not get and which makes a real difference on a naked at motorway speeds. This low mileage SP features a full dominator exhaust which sounds amazing, billet bar end mirrors, covered in carbon seat infills, key shroud and radiator side covers, GB engine covers, R&G paddock stand bobbins, two keys inc red key, owners manual and service book with a full history comprising of three services and lots of paperwork including invoice proof for each invoice.

Common Issues
While generally a reliable motorcycle, some common points to check when buying used include:
- Suspension Seals: Early models could sometimes suffer from weeping fork seals. Check for any signs of oil leakage.
- Clutch Feel: Some riders have reported a slightly grabby or inconsistent clutch, especially on older models. Test ride is crucial.
- Exhaust Connector Pipes: On some early models, the exhaust connector pipes could corrode. Inspect for any signs of rust or damage.
- Fairing/Bodywork: Due to its sporty nature, check for any scuffs, scratches, or damage from minor drops.
- Service History: Ensure the bike has been regularly serviced according to Yamaha's recommendations. Look for evidence of consistent maintenance.
Running Costs
The MT-09 is generally competitive in terms of running costs:
- Fuel Economy: Expect around 45-55 mpg depending on riding style.
- Insurance: Group 12-14 (varies by rider and location).
- Servicing: Major services are typically due every 10,000-12,000 miles. Costs can range from £200-£500 depending on what's required.
- Tyres: Expect to get around 3,000-5,000 miles from a set of performance-oriented tyres.
Variants
Yamaha has offered several variations of the MT-09:
- MT-09SP: This is a higher-spec version, usually featuring upgraded suspension (e.g., Öhlins rear shock), cruise control, and unique styling elements.
- Tracer 900/GT: Although not strictly an MT-09, the Tracer is based on the same platform but features a taller screen, more comfortable ergonomics, luggage mounting points, and is geared more towards touring.
Always ensure any used bike has a full-service history and has been well-maintained. A thorough inspection and test ride are essential before making a purchase.
