Description

the Iron 883 is the bike that brought a lot of riders into Harley ownership, and it earns that reputation honestly. The 883cc air-cooled 45 degree Evolution V-twin is a proper pushrod Harley motor, the same basic layout the factory has used since 1912, producing 51bhp and 50lb-ft. It is all about low-down torque and the rumble that comes with it, pulling cleanly from almost nothing and sounding exactly like a Harley should, which no water-cooled rival manages.

The styling is what sells it. The peanut tank, twin side-mounted exhausts, cut-down rear fender and drag bars give it a dark, stripped-back look with nothing surplus on it. Remove the badge and nobody would be in any doubt who built it.

It is also one of the most customised bikes on the road, with an enormous accessory and aftermarket range behind it. It is far easier to live with than the numbers suggest. The weight sits very low, so the bike feels nothing like 256kg once moving, and the 760mm seat height means almost anyone can get both feet down.

The Evolution engine has been in production long enough that the kinks are long gone, hydraulic valve lifters mean valve clearances never need adjusting, and the belt final drive will cover over 60,000 miles properly maintained. This low owner Iron features Vance & Heins Short shuts with an invoice for FP3 at fitting, Cult Werk 1" TUV approved drag bars, Doss pop-up fuel cap, V&H air filter, side mount clocks, datatag, one key and two fobs, owners manual/ service book with a history comprising of two stamps and one invoice.

About the HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER

The Harley-Davidson Sportster is an iconic entry-level cruiser, renowned for its classic American styling, accessible ergonomics, and raw, engaging ride. It has long served as a gateway to the Harley-Davidson brand, appealing to both first-time big bike owners and experienced riders seeking a customisable, stripped-back experience. In the UK, the Sportster has a strong following, celebrated for its heritage, distinct V-twin rumble, and significant customisation potential, making it a popular choice on the used market.

Why Buy a Used Harley-Davidson Sportster?

  • Classic Harley-Davidson styling without the premium price tag of larger models.
  • Immense customisation potential, allowing owners to truly personalise their bike.
  • Reliable V-twin engine that offers a characterful and engaging riding experience.
  • Strong aftermarket support and a dedicated owner community in the UK.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2005–2010: £4,500 – £6,500 — These older models offer excellent value for money, often with the traditional carburettor engine, ideal for those seeking a classic Sportster experience.
  • 2011–2016: £6,000 – £8,500 — Fuel-injected models from this era provide improved reliability and efficiency, representing a popular sweet spot for many buyers.
  • 2017–2020: £7,500 – £10,500 — Later models feature updated styling cues and often lower mileage, offering a nearly new feel before the model line was discontinued.

Common Issues to Check

  • Oil Leaks: Inspect the rocker box gaskets, primary cover, and crankcase for any signs of weeping or drips.
  • Battery Condition: Harleys are known for draining batteries if not regularly ridden or kept on a trickle charger, so check its health.
  • Brake Performance: Test both front and rear brakes for effectiveness and check for worn pads or warped discs.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Inspect wiring harnesses for chafing, and check all lights, indicators, and instrumentation for proper function.
  • Rust and Corrosion: Pay close attention to chrome finishes, exhaust pipes, and fasteners, especially on bikes used year-round in the UK.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 45 – 55 mpg (depending on engine size and riding style)
  • Insurance Group: 10 – 14 (varies greatly by engine size, rider's age, and customisations)
  • Servicing: Can be more expensive than Japanese counterparts, with main dealer services often costing £250-£400 for minor and £400+ for major services, though independent specialists offer more competitive rates.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Iron 883: A popular choice for its dark, stripped-back bobber styling and accessible 883cc engine, making it ideal for urban riders and customisation projects.
  • Forty-Eight 1200: Instantly recognisable by its fat front tyre and peanut fuel tank, this 1200cc model offers a more aggressive stance and stronger performance, perfect for riders wanting a muscular, minimalist look.
  • SuperLow: Designed with a lower seat height and revised suspension for enhanced comfort and easier handling, suiting shorter riders or those prioritising a relaxed cruising experience.
  • Roadster 1200: Featuring dual front discs, inverted forks, and mid-mount controls, the Roadster offers a more performance-oriented ride with a sportier edge than other Sportsters.
