Description

Just arrived with us here at RFH Classics we have this charming 1964 (B) Rover P4 95 4 Dr Saloon finished in the attractive period shade of Ivory with contrasting Mulberry Red Leather interior trim. First registered in May 1964, towards the end of P4 production, this Rover combines traditional British styling with a wonderfully inviting interior. The Ivory paintwork complements the rich leather upholstery and wood trim beautifully, giving the car a distinctive and elegant appearance.

Powered by Rover's 2.6-litre six-cylinder engine with a four-speed manual gearbox, this example also benefits from a Laycock overdrive, a welcome addition for more relaxed cruising. Of particular interest is the car's connection with Classics magazine, where it was the subject of restoration and road-test articles during 2012. Copies of the features are available and go towards providing an interesting insight into the work undertaken and its earlier life.

Now the Rover has arrived we will be instigating our usual assessment and preparation before adding a full description, photographs and walk-around video. Early enquiries are welcome. To register your interest, please contact RFH Classics on 01462 338755 or visit www.rfhclassics.co.uk.

About the ROVER P4

The Rover P4, affectionately known as 'Auntie Rover', is a classic British saloon car produced from 1949 to 1964. Renowned for its dignified styling, comfortable ride, and reputation for quality and refinement in its era, it embodies the quintessential post-war British luxury motoring experience. The P4 remains a popular choice for classic car enthusiasts in the UK seeking a distinctive and usable vintage vehicle with a strong heritage.

Why Buy a Used Rover P4?

  • **Classic British Elegance:** Own a piece of automotive history with timeless styling, characterful interiors, and an undeniable presence on the road.
  • **Robust and Usable Classic:** For a car of its age, the P4 is known for its sturdy build and, with proper maintenance, can be a reliable and enjoyable classic for weekend drives and club events.
  • **Strong Enthusiast Community:** Benefit from a dedicated owners' club, specialist garages, and good parts availability, making ownership more manageable and enjoyable.
  • **Distinctive Driving Experience:** Enjoy a truly analogue driving experience, far removed from modern cars, offering a unique connection to the road and a sense of occasion with every journey.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Project/Poor Condition: £2,500 – £6,500 — These will typically require significant restoration work, including bodywork, mechanicals, and interior refurbishment.
  • Good, Usable Driver: £7,000 – £14,000 — Vehicles in this range are generally MOT-exempt runners, offering a sound basis for enjoyment, though may have minor faults or require ongoing sympathetic maintenance.
  • Excellent/Restored: £15,000 – £30,000+ — These are well-maintained, professionally restored, or exceptionally original examples, often ready for show or immediate enjoyment without major investment.

Common Issues to Check

  • **Rust:** A primary concern for any classic, check sills, floor pans, boot floor, wheel arches, inner wings, and door bottoms thoroughly.
  • **Brake System:** Older drum brakes (or early discs on later models) can suffer from seized components, worn shoes/pads, fluid leaks, and general inefficiency compared to modern systems.
  • **Electrical System:** Age-related wiring issues, dynamo/alternator problems, voltage regulator faults, and dashboard instrument reliability are common.
  • **Engine Condition:** Look for oil leaks (especially around the sump and rocker cover), listen for unusual noises, check for blue smoke on startup/acceleration, and inspect cooling system integrity.
  • **Gearbox and Drivetrain:** Check for smooth gear changes, particularly the synchromesh, listen for differential noise, and feel for excessive play in the prop shaft or universal joints.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 20–28 mpg (depending on engine size and driving style)
  • Insurance Group: Typically specialist classic car insurance, not rated by conventional groups. Expect bespoke policies often with agreed values and limited mileage.
  • Servicing: Requires specialist knowledge and parts, often undertaken by classic car garages or enthusiastic DIY mechanics. Regular oil changes and grease points are essential.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Rover P4 75 (1949-1954): The original 'Cyclops' model with its central driving lamp. Ideal for purists seeking the earliest iteration and a smoother, if less powerful, six-cylinder engine.
  • Rover P4 90 (1953-1959): One of the most popular and balanced models. Its larger 2.6-litre six-cylinder engine offers a good blend of power and refinement, making it a very capable touring classic.
  • Rover P4 100 (1960-1962): A later, more powerful six-cylinder model. Offers improved performance and some modernisations, suitable for those wanting a slightly brisker classic experience.
  • Rover P4 80 (1959-1962): The only four-cylinder model in the later P4 range. It offers better fuel economy but sacrifices some of the P4's characteristic smoothness and power; a good choice for economy-minded classic drivers.
