Description

Here at RFH Classics we are pleased to welcome back this charming 1980 (V) MG Midget 1500 finished in stunning Pageant Blue complete with the Tan Vinyl Trim. We sold this car to the previous owner 3 years ago now and recently he has chosen to follow the more modern MGF route and so we were happy to have the car back for stock. Prior to him the previous owner had the car for over 16 years and both have clearly looked after the car as it presents just as good today as it did 3 years ago.

The paintwork has stood the test of time well as an older restoration with the paintwork still being as sharp today especially with the Black lower sill contrast. The standard Rostyle wheels have been upgraded to now feature the popular Minilite style Alloy wheels which enhance the cars visual look and weather protection is provided by the Black Vinyl folding roof that is in excellent condition with no tears or splits and complete with the half tonneau to complete the look with the roof folded down. Inside this Midget you find the popular and not so frequently seen Tan trim to the seats and carpets.

The Tan trim, which is in excellent order, is very popular as it gives the cabin a more spacious feel. The car has recently had the upgrade of Wood Trim steering wheel that compliments the interior very well. For the safety of the passengers the car was previously fitted with the safety roll bar behind the front seats that tucks neatly under the roof when the hood is up.

Under the bonnet of this Midget sits the 1491cc Lead Free 4 Cylinder petrol engine that is paired to a 4 speed manual gearbox. This has just been through the workshop for a pre-sales service where it has the carburettors tuned and cleaned. While the car was in for the pre-sales service we have had the car independently MOT tested so it will come complete with a July 26 MOT with no advisories.

During the restoration we are advised the car was converted to run on unleaded fuel however as with all our classic cars we do recommend the use of premium fuel. The engine fire into life well with good oil pressure both when cold and under normal warm running conditions. RFH Classics are proud to be Bedfordshire's largest independent classic car dealer with over 35 years of experience supplying quality vehicles you can buy with confidence.

Our reputation is built on trust, excellent customer service and glowing reviews. This MG Midget qualifies for zero rated Historic Road tax and is a ULEZ exempt vehicle helping to make it a great and cost effective classic to own and maintain. As a classic it is eligible for low cost classic car insurance and comes with the benefit of a 3 month major mechanical warranty.

Our vehicles are sold clear of finance or insurance damage with a certificate of provided at handover, we do recommend using premium unleaded fuel for all our classic vehicles. • Excellent parts availability and specialist support across the UK make ownership manageable.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1961–1970 (MkI/MkII/early MkIII): £5,000 – £12,000 — These early chrome bumper models offer raw classic appeal, often requiring some restoration or ongoing maintenance.
  • 1971–1974 (late MkIII 1275cc): £7,000 – £15,000 — Highly desirable chrome bumper versions with the more powerful 1275cc engine, typically in better, more usable condition.
  • 1975–1979 (Midget 1500 'Rubber Bumper'): £4,000 – £10,000 — Often mechanically sound with the Triumph 1500 engine, offering a slightly more modern feel but with less traditional styling.

Common Issues to Check

  • Extensive Rust: Critical areas include sills, wheel arches, front wings, boot floor, and chassis outriggers; check thoroughly, especially around jacking points.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Typical Lucas system issues such as unreliable gauges, indicator problems, and charging faults are common.
  • Oil Leaks: Common from the engine (especially front and rear seals), gearbox, and differential; check for drips under the car.
  • Worn Suspension & Steering: Check for play in kingpins, steering rack, and tired suspension bushes affecting handling and tyre wear.
  • Soft Top & Interior Condition: Inspect for rips, leaks, and brittle windows in the hood, and general wear to seats, carpets, and dashboard components.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 25-35 mpg (depending on engine variant and driving style)
  • Insurance Group: Specialist Classic Car Insurance (specific modern groups do not apply)
  • Servicing: Relatively inexpensive and straightforward, with many routine tasks manageable by a competent home mechanic. Parts are widely available and affordable.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • MKI/MKII (948cc/1098cc): For the purist seeking the earliest, most original Midget experience, offering a true vintage feel albeit with less power.
  • MKIII (1275cc, Chrome Bumper): The most popular and arguably best-balanced variant, offering the traditional chrome looks with a more capable and lively 1275cc A-Series engine.
  • Midget 1500 (Rubber Bumper): A practical choice for those wanting a slightly more relaxed and torquier classic, often more affordable and featuring the Triumph 1500 engine.
