About the Harley-Davidson Softail

The Harley-Davidson Softail family represents the epitome of classic American cruiser motorcycles, renowned for their iconic styling, comfortable ride, and that unmistakable V-twin rumble. The 'Softail' name refers to its innovative design which hides the rear suspension, giving the bike the clean, rigid look of a 'hardtail' without sacrificing the comfort of a sprung rear wheel. These bikes appeal to a wide range of riders, from those seeking a relaxed cruising experience to customisation enthusiasts, and enjoy a strong, aspirational reputation in the UK market as premium, desirable machines.

Why Buy a Used Harley-Davidson Softail?

  • Harley-Davidson motorcycles are known for their strong resale value, meaning a used Softail can be a smart investment that holds its worth well over time.
  • Many Softail owners invest heavily in customisation, offering a fantastic opportunity to buy a unique bike with desirable upgrades already fitted, often at a fraction of their original cost.
  • The Softail platform offers a comfortable and engaging riding experience, perfect for weekend cruises or longer touring, making it a versatile choice for various riding styles.
  • Buying used allows you to experience the legendary Harley-Davidson lifestyle and heritage at a more accessible price point than purchasing new.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2010–2015: £8,500 – £12,500 — These models, typically featuring the Twin Cam engine, offer classic Harley charm and a proven powertrain at a more budget-friendly entry point.
  • 2016–2017: £12,000 – £15,500 — Bridging the gap to the newer engine, these bikes often blend traditional looks with improved performance and modern amenities.
  • 2018–2022: £15,000 – £22,000+ — Later models benefit from the redesigned Softail chassis and the Milwaukee-Eight engine, offering a stiffer frame, better suspension, and a more refined, powerful ride.

Common Issues to Check

  • Engine Oil Leaks: Inspect around the rocker covers, primary cover, and pushrod tubes, especially on older Twin Cam models, for any signs of weeping or leaks.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Check all lights, indicators, horn, and instruments for proper operation. Corroded wiring connections can sometimes cause intermittent issues.
  • Suspension Condition: Look for oil leaks from the front fork seals and test the rear suspension for smooth operation, ensuring no excessive sag or harshness.
  • Drive Belt Wear: Examine the final drive belt for cracks, fraying, or missing teeth. A worn belt can be an expensive replacement.
  • Brake System: Check brake fluid levels, disc wear, and pad thickness. Ensure the brakes feel firm and responsive, with no sponginess.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 40-50 mpg (depending on engine size, model, and riding style for the 107/114 cubic inch engines).
  • Insurance Group: Typically Group 15-17 (motorcycle insurance groups can vary significantly based on model, rider history, and postcode).
  • Servicing: Main dealer servicing can be premium-priced, though a network of independent Harley-Davidson specialists often provides more affordable options. Regular oil changes and maintenance are crucial.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Street Bob: A stripped-back, aggressive bobber with a minimalist aesthetic. Ideal for riders wanting a raw, customisable Harley experience and an urban cruiser feel.
  • Heritage Classic: Blends nostalgic styling with modern comfort, often featuring removable screen and panniers. Perfect for long-distance touring or riders seeking a classic, comfortable cruiser.
  • Fat Bob: Characterised by its muscular stance, chunky tyres, and distinctive headlight. Suits riders looking for a performance-oriented cruiser with a unique, modern-aggressive look.
  • Low Rider S: A sportier Softail with upgraded suspension, inverted forks, and often the larger 117 or 114 cubic inch engine. Aimed at riders who prioritise performance and a darker, aggressive aesthetic.
  • Softail Slim: A classic, old-school bobber with a narrow profile and nostalgic styling. Appeals to riders seeking a traditional, understated look that's easy to handle.
