About the Harley-Davidson Flht
The Harley-Davidson FLHT, commonly known as the Electra Glide, is a quintessential American touring motorcycle, famed for its commanding presence, comfortable ride, and iconic V-twin engine thrum. It's a machine built for the open road, appealing to riders who prioritise long-distance comfort, classic cruiser styling, and the distinctive Harley-Davidson heritage. In the UK, it commands a strong following among enthusiasts looking for a premium touring experience with an unmistakable road presence.
Why Buy a Used Harley-Davidson FLHT?
- Reduced Depreciation: New Harley-Davidsons can be significant investments, and buying used allows you to benefit from the initial depreciation, offering better value for money.
- Timeless Appeal & Heritage: The FLHT's classic design and mechanical architecture have remained consistent, ensuring a used model still carries the iconic look and feel that Harley-Davidson is famous for.
- Extensive Aftermarket Support: The Electra Glide benefits from one of the largest aftermarket parts and accessories industries, making customisation and personalisation straightforward and accessible.
- Proven Touring Capability: Designed from the ground up for long-distance comfort, a used FLHT offers a well-tested platform for touring the UK and beyond, complete with ample luggage capacity and a relaxed riding position.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- Pre-2010: £7,500 – £12,000 — These older models offer an accessible entry point into Harley-Davidson touring, often with characterful carburettor engines.
- 2010–2015: £12,500 – £18,500 — Typically featuring Twin Cam engines with fuel injection, these provide a more modern riding experience with improved reliability and features.
- 2016–2020: £18,000 – £26,000 — Later models, especially those with the Milwaukee-Eight engine, offer significant performance, comfort, and infotainment upgrades.
Common Issues to Check
- Primary Chain Tensioner: Particularly on earlier Twin Cam engines, automatic tensioners can wear, leading to noise and potential damage if not addressed.
- Rear Wheel Bearings: Given the weight of the bike and its touring nature, inspect the rear wheel bearings for play or roughness, especially if a service history isn't complete.
- Electrical Gremlins: Older models can sometimes suffer from wiring issues, so check all lights, indicators, and dashboard functions thoroughly.
- Corrosion: Pay close attention to chrome components, engine cases, and fasteners for signs of corrosion, particularly if the bike has been ridden through UK winters.
- Service History: A comprehensive service history is crucial, indicating regular fluid changes and maintenance vital for the longevity of the large V-twin engine and transmission.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 35-45 mpg depending on riding style and model year, reflecting its large engine capacity.
- Insurance Group: Typically group 15-17 (out of 17 for motorcycles), due to its high value, large engine, and premium status.
- Servicing: Specialist Harley-Davidson servicing is recommended, with annual checks and fluid changes being essential, which can be more expensive than for smaller bikes.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Electra Glide Standard (FLHT): Ideal for riders who appreciate the classic touring platform but prefer a minimalist approach, often serving as a blank canvas for customisation.
- Electra Glide Classic (FLHTC): A step up in comfort and features, typically including cruise control, an intercom system, and more chrome, suiting riders who enjoy longer journeys with a passenger.
- Ultra Classic Electra Glide (FLHTCU): The fully loaded touring machine, offering maximum comfort with a comprehensive fairing, heated grips, premium audio, and a full tour-pak, perfect for cross-continental trips.
- Electra Glide Ultra Limited (FLHTK): A modern evolution of the Ultra Classic, featuring advanced infotainment, improved ergonomics, and the powerful Milwaukee-Eight engine for the ultimate contemporary touring experience.
