Description

With us at RFH Classics we have this wonderfully period correct 1957 Lambretta LD150, a scooter that perfectly captures the elegant simplicity and thoughtful engineering of mid-1950s Italian design. Finished in a very crisp New White with tasteful Blue detailing, this LD150 presents beautifully with a real presence about it. The enclosed bodywork and flowing lines give it a far more refined, almost automotive feel than many of its contemporaries, a design that still feels right today.

This particular scooter has had just two owners since arriving in the UK in 2011, with the most recent keeper enjoying it since 2016. It's clearly been well cared for, retaining all the charm and character you would hope for, while remaining a usable and enjoyable classic rather than something overly delicate. Produced by Innocenti, the LD series holds an important place in scooter history.

Introduced in 1951 as a more refined and fully enclosed alternative to earlier designs, it was aimed at riders who wanted practicality and weather protection without losing that unmistakable Italian style. By the mid-1950s, Lambretta had become a true rival to Vespa and models like this LD150 played a big part in that success. The 150cc engine offered a useful step up in performance over the earlier 125, while still delivering the smooth, easy-going riding experience that makes these scooters so enjoyable.

Whether it's for gentle weekend use, shows or simply as something a bit different to enjoy, it's a scooter that feels special without being intimidating. Today these early LD models are becoming increasingly sought after offering a combination of elegant styling, historical significance and genuine usability makes them a very appealing choice with good examples like this are not as easy to find as they once were. This is your opportunity to acquire a beautifully presented 1957 Lambretta LD150 in a timeless colour combination, with known UK ownership and the kind of presence that makes it just as enjoyable to look at as it is to ride.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1951–1954 (Project Condition): £1,500 – £4,000 — Often requiring full restoration, these are ideal for enthusiasts looking for a winter project or a blank canvas.
  • 1955–1957 (Good Original Condition): £4,000 – £8,000 — Generally running examples, possibly with some patina, perfect for regular use or light refurbishment.
  • 1958–1959 (Concours/Top Restoration): £8,000 – £15,000 — These represent the best examples, either meticulously restored or incredibly well-preserved original models.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust and Corrosion: Pay close attention to the floorboards, leg shields, and hidden areas of the frame for rust, especially on unrestored examples.
  • Engine Condition: Check for signs of excessive smoke, oil leaks, and listen for unusual noises from the crank, bearings, or piston.
  • Electrical System: Original 6V systems can be temperamental; check lights, horn, and ignition. Many have been converted to more reliable 12V.
  • Gearbox and Clutch: Ensure smooth gear changes (hand or foot-operated, depending on model) and that the clutch engages without slipping.
  • Brakes: The original drum brakes can be adequate when well-adjusted, but check for wear, seized cables, or poor stopping power.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 70-90 mpg (for 125cc/150cc two-stroke engines)
  • Insurance Group: Specialist Classic Insurance (often available with agreed value and limited mileage policies, making it more affordable than modern vehicle insurance).
  • Servicing: Relatively simple two-stroke mechanics, often DIY-friendly. Parts are generally available through specialist suppliers, though some unique items can be sought after.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Lambretta LD 125 (Series I, II, III): Ideal for those seeking the purist's classic experience and easier city riding. Earlier models typically feature a 3-speed gearbox, with later Series III models sometimes offering 4-speeds.
  • Lambretta LD 150 (Series II, III): For riders wanting a bit more power for longer journeys or hill climbing. These often come with a 4-speed gearbox, providing a more versatile ride.
  • Lambretta LD 'f' (Foot-change): Introduced in 1957, these models feature a foot-operated gear change, which can feel more intuitive for riders accustomed to modern motorcycles.
