Description

The bike specialists, trading standard award winners. Bike ID: #10499 Here we have for sale our stunning MK 1 full carbon Ducati 749R. This UK bike has covered just 10,233 miles from new and is in exceptional condition.

This example is supplied with the book pack including service history and old MOT's and receipts showing the most recent belt service carried out in November 2025 by ourselves when we sold it to its current owner, the bike has not covered any mileage since that time having sat in its owners collection. This 2004 model year example is fitted with its standard exhaust asymmetric system as delivered from Bologna - the only upgrades are carbon swing arm covers and magnesium 999R headlamp shell replacing the heavier standard shell which is included in the sale. This makes for far better front end response and is the only OEM upgrade to the bike apart from changing the original hose set to red Samco.

The bike has recently had two new magnesium covers fitted [one each to the vertical and horizontal cylinders] along with the special washers and nuts and new brake and clutch levers fitted. All parts fitted were OEM Ducati supplied. We are a family-owned company who pride ourselves on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind.

We offer all the usual Motorcycle Dealer facilities such as Low-rate finance and extended warranties and operate a no pressure environment where you can relax and enjoy good old-fashioned service with a smile. We have just upgraded our Indoor Showroom where you can see Motorcycles you sometimes can only dream of seeing and sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves when we get certain bikes in as we would like to keep them all! We cater for very specialist tastes and can source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.

About the Ducati 749

The Ducati 749, produced from 2003 to 2006, is a distinctive Italian sportbike known for its striking Pierre Terblanche design, characterful L-twin engine, and agile handling. Often seen as the more accessible sibling to the powerful 999, it offers a deeply engaging riding experience without being quite as intimidating. It appeals to discerning enthusiasts who appreciate a blend of performance, exotic styling, and the unmistakable sound and feel of a classic Ducati, standing out in the UK market as a sophisticated and desirable machine for road and occasional track use.

Why Buy a Used Ducati 749?

  • Distinctive Italian Styling: The 749 boasts a unique and often polarising design from Pierre Terblanche, which has matured into a celebrated and instantly recognisable Ducati aesthetic, setting it apart from its contemporaries.
  • Engaging L-twin Performance: Its 748cc Desmodromic V-twin engine delivers a thrilling power delivery and a raw, mechanical soundtrack that is quintessentially Ducati, providing an exhilarating ride on twisty B-roads.
  • Superb Handling Dynamics: With a fully adjustable chassis, premium suspension components, and a lightweight frame, the 749 offers precise steering and exceptional stability, making it a rewarding bike for spirited riding.
  • Potential for Future Classic Status: As a unique model from a significant era in Ducati's history, well-maintained examples of the 749 are increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, hinting at potential future appreciation.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2003–2004 (Base models): £4,500 – £6,500 — These early examples offer an accessible entry into Ducati 749 ownership, typically requiring careful checks on service history and overall condition.
  • 2004–2005 (S models, well-kept base): £6,000 – £8,000 — At this price point, you can find cleaner base models or the more potent 'S' variants, often benefiting from better suspension components and slightly higher specification.
  • 2005–2006 (R models, pristine S/base): £8,000 – £12,000+ — Represents the top end, including the rare, track-focused 'R' models or exceptionally well-preserved 'S' and late-production standard bikes with low mileage.

Common Issues to Check

  • Cam Belt Service History: Crucial for the Desmodromic engine; belts require replacement every two years or 12,000 miles. Neglect can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder Leaks: A common Ducati affliction, often leading to reduced clutch feel or fluid leaks from around the sprocket cover.
  • Exhaust System Cracks: Check the exhaust headers, especially the front cylinder, for hairline cracks that can develop over time due to heat cycling.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Inspect wiring harnesses for wear, and be aware of potential issues with the voltage regulator/rectifier, which can lead to battery drain or charging problems.
  • Fairing Condition and Crash Damage: As a sportbike, inspect all fairing panels, frame, and suspension components carefully for signs of previous accidents or poor repairs.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 35 – 45 mpg, depending on riding style and model variant.
  • Insurance Group: Group 45 – 50 (on a 1-50 scale).
  • Servicing: Specialist and can be expensive due to the intricate Desmodromic valve adjustment, cam belt replacements, and the need for Ducati-specific diagnostics.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • 749 (Base Model): Ideal for riders seeking the quintessential Ducati experience without the extreme demands or cost of the 'S' or 'R' models, offering a superb blend of performance and road usability.
  • 749S: A step up, featuring higher-specification suspension (often a mix of Showa and Öhlins), slightly more power, and often radial brakes, making it a more focused and capable machine for fast road riding.
  • 749R: The ultimate track-bred variant, featuring a shorter-stroke engine, titanium valves, Öhlins suspension, radial brakes, and lightweight components; it's a homologation special for serious enthusiasts and track day riders.
  • 749 Dark: A more budget-friendly option, often featuring a black painted frame and engine, and typically without the passenger seat cowl or some of the premium finishes of the standard model, but mechanically identical to the base 749.
