About the Toyota Granvia

The Toyota Granvia is a spacious and exceptionally comfortable people carrier, predominantly imported into the UK from Japan. Known for its robust Toyota reliability, generous interior space, and smooth ride, it appeals to large families, private hire operators, or anyone needing a versatile vehicle with a focus on passenger comfort. While not as common as domestic MPVs, its reputation for durability and luxury features makes it a sought-after choice in the used import market.

Why Buy a Used Toyota Granvia?

  • Unmatched Reliability: Built with Toyota's legendary engineering, the Granvia is known for its incredible longevity and dependable mechanicals, especially the diesel variants.
  • Superior Comfort and Space: Offering multiple seating configurations, often with captain's chairs and ample legroom, it provides a luxurious and comfortable ride for all passengers, perfect for long journeys.
  • Smooth, Refined Drive: Many Granvia models come with a sophisticated suspension system, sometimes including air suspension, delivering a surprisingly plush and quiet motoring experience for its size.
  • Excellent Value for Money: As an import, it offers a level of specification, comfort, and build quality often found in much more expensive domestic vehicles, representing great value on the used market.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1995–1998: £4,000 – £8,000 — Early models, still offering great space and comfort for a low entry price, often with higher mileage.
  • 1998–2000: £6,000 – £10,000 — Mid-life models, potentially with better specifications and lower rust levels, offering a good balance of age and condition.
  • 2000–2002: £8,000 – £14,000 — Later, more refined examples, often with lower mileage and premium features, representing the best available pre-owned Granvias.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: As an older import, particularly check the underbody, wheel arches, and sills for corrosion, especially if it hasn't been rust-proofed.
  • Automatic Gearbox: Ensure smooth shifts without hesitation or clunking. Check the transmission fluid condition – it should be red, not dark or burnt-smelling.
  • Air Conditioning System: The dual-zone climate control can be complex. Test both front and rear systems thoroughly for effective cooling and heating.
  • Suspension Components: Pay attention to the rear air suspension (if fitted) for signs of leaks, a constantly running compressor, or uneven ride height.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Due to age, check all electrics including power windows, central locking, sunroof (if present), and dashboard warning lights.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 20-28 mpg (3.0L Diesel), significantly less for petrol variants.
  • Insurance Group: Group 30-35 (approx.) due to its age, size, and import status.
  • Servicing: Routine servicing is straightforward for mechanicals, but specialist knowledge might be needed for import-specific components. Parts can sometimes require ordering.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • 3.0L Diesel (1KZ-TE engine): This is the most common and sought-after engine, renowned for its strong torque, decent economy for its size, and legendary reliability. Ideal for high mileage or heavy loads.
  • 2.7L Petrol (3RZ-FE engine): Offers a smoother and quieter operation than the diesel, but with significantly higher fuel consumption. Suited for lower mileage or those prioritising refinement.
  • 7-Seater Configuration: Often features two captain's chairs in the middle row, providing superior comfort and an executive feel with individual armrests. Perfect for families wanting extra luxury or business use.
  • 8-Seater Configuration: Maximises passenger capacity with a more traditional bench-style seating arrangement in the middle. Best for larger families or shuttle services where outright passenger numbers are key.
