About the Bessacarr E520
The Bessacarr E520 is a popular low-profile coachbuilt motorhome, renowned for its excellent build quality and practical layout, making it an enduring favourite among couples touring the UK and Europe. As part of the Swift Group, Bessacarr models are well-regarded for their comfort, thoughtful design, and robust construction on the reliable Fiat Ducato chassis. The E520 typically features a fixed French bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and a comfortable washroom, striking a good balance between compact dimensions and spacious living, appealing to those who want ease of driving without compromising on amenities.
Why Buy a Used Bessacarr E520?
- Significant savings compared to a new motorhome, allowing you to access a premium build quality for a much more accessible price.
- Established reliability, benefiting from the robust Fiat Ducato base vehicle and proven Bessacarr habitation components, with plenty of community knowledge available.
- Strong resale value due to its consistent popularity and reputation for durability, making it a sound investment should you wish to upgrade later.
- Many used models come fully equipped with essential accessories like awnings, bike racks, and solar panels, saving you initial setup costs.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 2006–2009: £27,000 – £33,000 — At this price, you'll find well-maintained earlier models, offering a great entry point into motorhome ownership.
- 2010–2012: £33,000 – £38,000 — These models often benefit from subtle interior updates and slightly newer chassis, providing a good balance of value and modern features.
- 2013–2015: £38,000 – £45,000 — Late production E520s will be in excellent condition, often with lower mileage and the most up-to-date features for this specific model run.
Common Issues to Check
- Damp Ingress: Crucial for any motorhome; carefully inspect around windows, rooflights, and corner seams for signs of water ingress, often indicated by soft walls or staining.
- Appliance Functionality: Ensure the fridge, oven, hob, heating system (Truma/Alde), and hot water boiler are all fully operational on both gas and electric.
- Chassis Corrosion & Mechanicals: Check the Fiat Ducato base vehicle for rust, especially on the subframe and exhaust, and verify service history for the engine, gearbox, and brakes.
- Water System Integrity: Inspect pipes, tanks, and the water pump for leaks or signs of previous repair, and confirm tap and shower pressure.
- Tyre Age & Condition: Motorhome tyres can age faster than they wear out due to extended periods of storage; check the manufacturing date (DOT code) and look for cracks.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Expect around 20-28 mpg depending on engine size, driving style, and load, as motorhomes are heavier and less aerodynamic than cars.
- Insurance Group: Motorhomes are usually insured under specialist motorhome policies, which take into account their value, security features, and limited annual mileage rather than a car insurance group.
- Servicing: Requires two annual services: a mechanical service for the Fiat Ducato chassis (similar to a large van) and a habitation service to check all the living area appliances and systems for safety and functionality.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Bessacarr E520 (2.3L Multijet): This is the most common and often preferred engine choice, offering a good balance of power and fuel efficiency for most touring needs. It's ideal for couples seeking reliable performance on a range of roads.
- Bessacarr E520 (3.0L Multijet): Less common, but if available, the larger 3.0-litre engine provides significantly more power and torque, making it excellent for tackling steep inclines or towing. This variant suits those who prioritise effortless cruising and strong acceleration.
- Later Production Models (e.g., 2010+): While the core E520 layout remained consistent, later models often benefited from subtle interior upgrades, improved heating controls, and potentially more robust leisure batteries, making them a good choice for those wanting a slightly more modern feel and enhanced comfort features.
