Description

The bike specialists, trading standards award winners. Bike ID: #10360 We have the pleasure of offering for sale our fantastic Yamaha RD500LC YPVS. Sporting the stunning red and black livery.

This low mileage example has covered just 11,707 miles. It offers an extremely rare opportunity to own a true matching numbers, full powered UK version (not to be confused with the restricted Japanese imports) of this legendary 2 stroke iconic Yamaha. The bike was fully restored back in 2010 with "Dream Machine" carrying out a full repaint of the bike (receipt included) and is supplied with a file which includes the original hand book and Yamaha service/parts catalogue.

Prior to sale the bike will benefit from a full service and full MOT prior to sale. This iconic 2-stroke, was at the forefront in the 1980's as one of the must have GP replica bikes. Yamaha looked at the success of the YZR500 and realised that a road-going version of this would sell well.

The RD500LC YPVS was bred from the ground-up to be a race replica, and it was absolutely focused in its mission. Everything was lightened and stripped down for performance. People were in love with the 2 stroke V4 and Yamaha really hit the nail on the head with this motorcycle. 2 strokes don't get much better than this, and our example offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to own what must be, in our opinion, the best example of this 80's dream bike for sale in the world.

We are a family-owned company that prides itself on the quality of our Motorcycles and all of them are carefully chosen, handpicked enthusiast pre-owned examples that are always HPI Clear for your peace of mind. We offer all the usual used Motorcycle Dealer facilities such as Low-rate finance and extended warranties and operate a no-pressure environment where you can relax and enjoy good old-fashioned service with a smile. We have just upgraded our Indoor Showroom where you can see Motorcycles you sometimes can only dream of seeing and sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves when we get certain bikes in as we would like to keep them all!

We cater for very specialist tastes and can usually source rare and coveted bikes that we do not have in stock and have lots of contacts throughout the world.

About the Yamaha Rd500lc

Revered for its potent V4 engine, distinctive exhaust note, and aggressive styling, it offers a thrilling and raw riding experience unlike modern bikes. In the UK, it commands an almost cult following among enthusiasts and collectors, representing a golden era of two-stroke performance and is now a highly sought-after classic.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1984–1986 (Project/Runner): £15,000 – £22,000 — These bikes may require significant mechanical or cosmetic restoration but offer a more accessible entry point.
  • 1984–1986 (Good Condition): £22,000 – £28,000 — Well-maintained, ridden examples that are ready to enjoy, potentially with some minor imperfections.
  • 1984–1986 (Concours/Restored): £28,000 – £40,000+ — Pristine, fully restored, or exceptionally low-mileage original examples suitable for show or serious collectors.

Common Issues to Check

  • YPVS (Yamaha Power Valve System): Check for sticky or malfunctioning exhaust power valves, which can affect performance and reliability.
  • Crankshaft Bearings: Big-end bearing wear is a known issue on these engines; listen for unusual noises and check service history for rebuilds.
  • Carburettor Condition & Setup: Ensure all four carbs are clean, correctly jetted, and synchronised for smooth running and optimal performance.
  • Frame & Electrics: Inspect the frame for corrosion, especially around welds, and check all electrical components for age-related failures or previous amateur repairs.
  • Original Exhaust System: The original pipes are prone to rust and damage; replacements are very expensive and often hard to source.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 30-40 mpg (when ridden carefully, significantly less under hard riding)
  • Insurance Group: Typically 15-17 (specialist classic bike insurance is highly recommended)
  • Servicing: Requires specialist two-stroke knowledge; parts can be rare and costly. Regular engine maintenance, including top-end rebuilds, is crucial for longevity.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Original & Unmodified: For the purist collector, these examples offer the most authentic experience and hold the strongest investment value.
  • Restored Example: Ideal for buyers who want a pristine, ready-to-show motorcycle without the time and expense of undertaking a full restoration themselves.
  • Lightly Modified: Some bikes may have subtle upgrades (e.g., modern suspension, braking components, or aftermarket exhausts) to enhance rideability and reliability, appealing to riders who want to enjoy the bike more frequently.
