Description
The bike specialists, trading standard award winners. Bike ID: #10647 We The Bike Specialists are incredibly proud to present what is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and collectible Ducati 748 SPs we have had the pleasure of offering - the 1995 Ducati 748 SP Murayama, Build #195, with an exceptionally low 3,589 miles from new. The 748 SP was Ducati's dedicated Sport Production model, created to put a genuine race-bred Ducati into the hands of customers while providing the homologation basis for competition in the highly competitive World Supersport class.
Unlike the standard 748, the SP received a substantially higher specification, including a more highly tuned engine, special camshafts, higher compression, closer-ratio gearing, oil cooler, floating cast-iron Brembo discs, Öhlins rear shock and lightweight alloy single-seat subframe. It was very much a production motorcycle with competition at its heart. The early 748 SPs are particularly significant in Ducati history, representing the beginning of the 748's development as a serious competition-derived middleweight.
The Murayama examples are especially interesting to collectors, being associated with motorcycles destined for the Japanese market during this early period of SP production. This particular motorcycle carries several fascinating details supporting its Murayama identity. The original Ducati identification plaque remains beneath the registration plate on the tail section, while a Murayama sticker can be found behind the left-hand headlight.
These details add considerably to the provenance and authenticity of this very special machine. The motorcycle is Build #195, with frame number 000195 and engine production sequence 000276. Rather than indicating a replacement engine, this is consistent with Ducati producing engines and frames on separate production lines before bringing them together during assembly.
Both numbers belong to the same 1995 production period, providing an interesting indication of the motorcycle's originality. Following its importation into the UK, the previous owner chose to have the motorcycle refinished in a distinctive orange and white livery inspired by Chris Walker's Ducati racing colours of the period. While not the original factory paint scheme, it is a particularly fitting tribute to the racing heritage at the heart of the SP and gives this example its own distinctive character.
The 748 SP represents an important chapter in Ducati's history - combining the iconic Tamburini-designed styling of the Ducati superbikes with a highly specified chassis and race-derived engine. The SP was created for riders who wanted something considerably more focused than the standard road bike. This is a very special Ducati indeed!!

Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- 1997–2000 (Biposto/early S): £6,500 – £9,500 — These early models offer an accessible entry point to 748 ownership, typically representing well-used but still cherished examples.
- 2001–2003 (S/SP/SPS): £8,000 – £12,000 — Mid-period and higher-specification S, SP, or SPS models often come with desirable upgrades and slightly better condition.

Common Issues to Check
- Desmodromic Valve Service: The intricate desmodromic valve system requires precise and expensive servicing every 6,000-7,500 miles, which is critical for engine health.
- Electrical Gremlins: Older Ducatis can suffer from wiring harness issues, weak battery performance, and faulty sensors, leading to intermittent running problems.
- Clutch Slave Cylinder Leaks: The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is a known weak point, often leaking fluid and affecting clutch operation.
- Fairing Condition and Fasteners: Check for cracked or poorly repaired fairings, especially around mounting points, and ensure all fasteners are present and secure.
- Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter Issues: Blocked fuel filters or a failing fuel pump can lead to poor running, especially after periods of inactivity.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: 35–45 mpg (depending on riding style)
- Insurance Group: High Performance (reflecting its sports bike status)
- Servicing: Generally expensive, especially the major desmodromic valve services. Specialist Ducati knowledge is often required.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- Ducati 748 Biposto: The standard model, featuring a pillion seat, suitable for those who might occasionally carry a passenger and desire the classic 748 experience without the higher price tag of rarer variants.
- Ducati 748S (Strada): A more performance-oriented road version with upgrades like Showa suspension and lighter components, ideal for riders wanting a sharper handling experience for road use.
- Ducati 748SP/SPS (Sport Production/Sport Production Special): Rarer, more track-focused models with higher-spec engine components, Öhlins rear shock, and a single-seat unit, perfect for collectors or serious track enthusiasts.
- Ducati 748R: The ultimate, homologation-special track version, featuring a more powerful engine, full Öhlins suspension, and numerous lightweight components, appealing to collectors and those who demand the pinnacle of 748 performance for track days.
