Key Specifications
The Renault Trafic (X82 generation) offers a strong balance of practicality and efficiency.
- Payload: Typically ranges from 1,000kg to 1,280kg, depending on the specific model and wheelbase.
- Load Volume: Short Wheelbase (SWB) L1 models offer around 5.2m³, while Long Wheelbase (LWB) L2 models provide approximately 6.0m³ of cargo space.
- Dimensions (L2H1): Around 5,400mm length, 1,956mm width (excl. mirrors), 1,971mm height.
- Engine Options (Common in UK):
- 1.6 dCi (R9M): 95hp, 120hp, 125hp (single turbo) and 140hp (twin turbo). Pre-2019.
- 2.0 dCi (M9R): 120hp, 145hp, 170hp. From 2019 onwards.
- Euro Standard: Early 1.6dCi models are often Euro 5 or Euro 6b. From late 2016/early 2017, Euro 6c became standard, and from 2019, 2.0dCi engines are Euro 6d (sometimes referred to as Euro 6.2 or Euro 6.3). This is crucial for ULEZ/CAZ compliance.
What to Look For When Buying Used
Thorough inspection is vital for a used Trafic.
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter): Essential for modern diesels. Check warning lights and service history for DPF issues, especially on vans used for short, stop-start journeys. Costly to replace.
- Timing Chain/Belt: The 1.6 dCi R9M engine uses a timing chain, which should ideally last the life of the vehicle but can stretch, leading to expensive repairs. The 2.0 dCi M9R also uses a chain. Listen for rattles on start-up.
- Clutch and Gearbox: Test drive thoroughly. Listen for crunching gears or a slipping clutch, particularly on higher mileage models. The 6-speed manual gearbox is generally robust.
- Rust Spots: While generally good, check around wheel arches, sills, and door bottoms, especially on older models or those used in coastal areas.
- Electrics: Test all electrics, including windows, central locking, and infotainment. Faulty wiring can be complex to diagnose.
- Brakes: Examine discs and pads for wear. Uneven wear can indicate sticking calipers.
Running Costs for Businesses
Understanding the financial implications is key for any business.
- Typical Insurance: Renault Trafic vans typically fall into insurance groups 13-20 (out of 50 for vans), depending on engine and specification. Annual premiums for businesses can range from £600 to £1,500+.
- Fuel Economy: The 1.6 dCi 120hp can achieve up to 45-50 mpg (NEDC) / 35-42 mpg (WLTP real-world). The newer 2.0 dCi 145hp offers similar figures, around 38-45 mpg (WLTP).
- Servicing: Renault main dealer servicing can range from £250 for minor services to £500+ for major services. Independent specialists often offer more competitive rates.
- ULEZ/CAZ Compliance: Crucially, most Trafic vans registered from late 2016/early 2017 onwards (Euro 6 compliant) will be exempt from ULEZ and CAZ charges. Older Euro 5 models will incur daily charges in these zones. Always verify the Euro standard with the seller or V5C document.
Is the Renault Trafic Right For Your Business?
The Renault Trafic is an excellent choice for a wide range of businesses.
- Who it Suits: Tradespeople like plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and small delivery businesses will appreciate its practical load space and car-like driving experience. Its comfort makes it suitable for longer journeys too.
- Alternatives: Consider rivals such as the Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro (which is mechanically identical to the Trafic until 2019), Volkswagen Transporter, and Peugeot Expert/Citroën Dispatch. Each offers slightly different attributes regarding drive, trim, and residual values.
With careful selection, a used Renault Trafic can provide reliable service and excellent value for money for your UK business.
