Common Issues

While generally reliable, some common areas to be aware of when buying a used Tiguan include:

• DSG Gearbox: Early or poorly maintained DSG gearboxes can sometimes develop issues, such as jerky shifting. Regular servicing is crucial.
• Electrical Gremlins: Like many modern cars, the Tiguan can occasionally suffer from minor electrical faults, such as issues with infotainment systems or sensors.
• Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on TDI models: Short journeys can cause the DPF to clog, especially on older diesel models. Ensure the car has been used for regular longer journeys.
• Service History: A full and documented service history is essential for peace of mind, especially regarding the DSG gearbox and other powertrain components.

Running Costs

Running costs for the Tiguan are competitive for its class. Expect:

• Fuel Economy: Varies depending on engine and driving style, but generally good for an SUV. Official figures often range from 40-60 MPG.
• Insurance: Typically falls into mid-range insurance groups, depending on the model and driver profile.
• Taxation: Varies based on CO2 emissions and the vehicle's registration date (pre/post April 2017).
• Servicing: Main dealer servicing can be pricey, but independent garages offer a more affordable alternative.

The Tiguan has been offered with a variety of trim levels and specialised variants over the years:

• S: The entry-level trim.
• SE/SE Nav: A popular mid-range option offering a good balance of equipment and comfort, often including navigation.
