Here we have an excellent classic Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 Se 3 door coupe finished in caribic blue met with contrasting grey velour trim. The car has only had 2 owners, the first owner had it for 31 years 8 months 2 days, we have actually owned it since. - Iconic 90s Design: Its sleek, aerodynamic lines remain eye-catching and distinctive, offering a true retro feel that stands apart from today's vehicles.
- Affordable Classic Ownership: The Calibra offers an accessible entry point into classic coupé ownership, with many well-preserved examples available at reasonable prices.
- Strong Parts Availability: Sharing numerous mechanical components with the popular Vauxhall Cavalier ensures that parts are generally easy to source and often inexpensive.
- Engaging Driving Experience: With a range of engines from economical 8-valve units to potent V6s and rare Turbos, there's a Calibra variant to suit various driving preferences, offering a raw, analogue feel.
Typical Price Range
All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.
- Early 1990s (8V/early 16V): £2,000 – £5,000 — These represent solid, usable examples of the entry-level models, often needing some minor cosmetic attention or light mechanical work.
- Mid-late 1990s (Later 16V/V6): £4,000 – £8,000 — Expect tidier examples, potentially with better specifications or the smoother V6 engine, offering a more refined classic experience.
- Performance/Pristine (V6/Turbo/Mint): £8,000 – £15,000+ — Reserved for low-mileage, exceptionally well-maintained V6 models, very rare Turbo variants, or concours-condition examples ready for shows.
Common Issues to Check
- Rust: Thoroughly inspect rear wheel arches, sills, inner wings, and the sunroof surround for common rust spots.
- Electrical Gremlins: Check all electrics, particularly window motors, central locking, and dashboard warning lights, as these can be temperamental.
- Head Gasket: Especially on the 2.0i 16V 'Redtop' (C20XE) engine, listen for signs of overheating or check for coolant/oil mixing.
- Suspension Wear: Listen for knocks or creaks, indicating worn bushes, ball joints, or shock absorbers, particularly on higher mileage cars.
- Water Ingress: Check boot and door seals, and around the sunroof (if fitted), for signs of leaks or dampness in the interior.
Running Costs
- Fuel Economy: Expect around 25-35 mpg for 8V and 16V models, dropping to 20-30 mpg for V6 and Turbo variants, depending on driving style.
- Insurance Group: Typically ranges from Group 18 for early 8V models up to Group 28 for V6 and Turbo variants, reflecting their classic status and performance.
- Servicing: Generally straightforward for most engines due to shared Cavalier parts, with many independent specialists able to service them. Performance models may require more specialist knowledge and parts.
Which Variant Should I Choose?
- 2.0i (8V): The most common and robust entry point, offering solid reliability, lower running costs, and a relaxed drive for everyday classic enjoyment.
- 2.0i 16V: A step up in performance from the 8V, this 'Redtop' engine is more spirited but demands diligent maintenance, especially regarding head gasket health.
- 2.5i V6: Offers a smoother, more refined driving experience with a distinctive engine note and better cruising ability, making it an excellent choice for longer journeys.
- 2.0i 16V Turbo 4x4: The ultimate performance variant, featuring a potent turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive; highly sought after, complex, and more expensive to maintain but offers thrilling performance.
