About the Nissan 350z

The Nissan 350Z, launched in the early 2000s, is a revered two-seater sports coupé (and roadster) that quickly established itself as a modern classic. Known for its naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 engine, rear-wheel drive, and distinctive, muscular styling, it offers an engaging and visceral driving experience without breaking the bank. Appealing strongly to driving enthusiasts and those seeking a characterful, performance-oriented car, the 350Z enjoys a strong reputation in the UK for its blend of Japanese reliability, tunability, and relative affordability in the used market.

Why Buy a Used Nissan 350Z?

  • Iconic V6 Engine Note: The 3.5-litre VQ35DE or VQ35HR engine delivers a captivating, raw exhaust note that enhances the driving experience.
  • Engaging Driver's Car: With its rear-wheel drive, balanced chassis, and direct steering, the 350Z provides an analogue and rewarding feel behind the wheel.
  • Distinctive and Timeless Styling: Its bold, sculpted lines and aggressive stance have aged remarkably well, ensuring it still turns heads today.
  • Affordable Performance Potential: Offers significant performance for its price point on the used market, making it an accessible modern classic.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 2003–2006 (VQ35DE/RevUp): £6,500 – £11,000 — At this price, you'll find early models with potentially higher mileage or some modifications, offering an affordable entry into 350Z ownership.
  • 2006–2007 (RevUp/HR): £9,000 – £15,000 — This range covers facelift models with improved interiors and potentially the more powerful 'RevUp' engine, or early 'HR' variants, often representing a good balance of condition and performance.
  • 2007–2009 (VQ35HR): £12,000 – £22,000 — These are the highly sought-after HR models with the updated 313hp engine, typically in better condition and with lower mileage, commanding premium prices.

Common Issues to Check

  • Oil Consumption (RevUp engine): Later 'RevUp' (2006-2007) engines can suffer from higher than average oil consumption; regular checks are crucial.
  • Clutch & Flywheel Wear: The heavy clutch and spirited driving can lead to premature wear of the clutch and dual-mass flywheel, which can be costly to replace.
  • Rear Differential Bush: The bush supporting the rear differential is a common failure point, leading to clunking noises or excessive play under acceleration.
  • Suspension Bushings: Age and mileage can lead to worn suspension bushes, affecting handling and ride comfort; listen for knocks and inspect for perishing rubber.
  • Rust on Sills/Subframe: As with many cars of its age, inspect the sills, wheel arches, and subframe for signs of corrosion, especially on cars that haven't been garaged.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Expect around 20-25 mpg (miles per gallon) combined, heavily dependent on driving style.
  • Insurance Group: Typically falls into insurance groups 35-40, reflecting its performance nature, so expect higher premiums.
  • Servicing: Standard servicing is straightforward, but specialist parts can be more expensive. A healthy independent specialist network helps keep costs manageable.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Standard Coupé: A purist's choice, offering the best rigidity and lightest weight for focused driving without unnecessary frills.
  • GT Pack: Adds desirable features like heated leather seats, a premium Bose sound system, and cruise control, enhancing comfort for daily driving or longer journeys.
  • Roadster: For those who prioritise open-air motoring, the Roadster offers the same V6 engine and styling with the added enjoyment of a convertible roof.
  • 313bhp (HR) Models (2007-2009): Featuring a significantly revised engine (VQ35HR), these offer the most power, a higher redline, and improved refinement, making them the ultimate choice for performance enthusiasts.
