Prices for used Land Rover Discoverys can vary significantly based on the model year, mileage, condition, and specification. Here are some estimated price ranges you might expect to see in the UK for 2025-2026:
| Model Generation | Estimated Price Range (GBP) |
|---|---|
| Discovery 3 (2004-2009) | £4,000 - £9,000 |
| Discovery 4 (2009-2016) | £8,000 - £20,000 |

What to Look For When Buying
When inspecting a used Land Rover Discovery, pay close attention to the following:
- Service History: Essential for a luxury 4x4. Ensure it's been regularly maintained, especially the gearbox and differentials.
- Bodywork and Chassis: Check for rust, particularly around the wheel arches, sills, and chassis. Look for signs of damage from off-roading.
- Interior Condition: Assess wear and tear on seats, carpets, and controls, especially in rear-view cameras and infotainment systems.
- Tyres and Brakes: Costly items to replace, so check their condition.
- Electrics: Test all electronic features, including windows, air conditioning, sat-nav, and parking sensors.
Running Costs for Land Rover Discoverys in the UK
Owning a Discovery involves costs typical of a large, premium SUV. Fuel economy will vary depending on the engine and driving style, with diesel engines generally offering better MPG for longer journeys. Expect insurance group ratings to be higher than average. VED (road tax) will depend on the vehicle's CO2 emissions, typically falling into higher tax bands for older models or more powerful engines. Servicing costs can also be higher than for smaller vehicles due to the complexity and size of the components.
Common Issues and Considerations
While generally reliable, Discoverys can suffer from common issues:
- Air Suspension: Issues with compressors or leaking air springs can occur, though these are often repairable.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): Short urban journeys can lead to DPF blockages, especially in older models.
- EGR Valves: Can become clogged over time, affecting performance.
- Electronic Faults: While improved in later models, electrical gremlins can sometimes appear.
Thorough pre-purchase checks and a commitment to regular, quality maintenance are key to minimising potential problems and ensuring many years of enjoyment from your used Land Rover Discovery.
