Description

This stunning Ford Escort RS Turbo is available from MATS Garage, a family owned used car dealership in Goole, East Yorkshire. The gorgeous white RS Turbo was registered in 1987, has a mileage showing 26,571. It is my own personal car with the V5 in my name, I've owned it since 2016.

The previous owner to me bought the car in 2008, so although the car has had 8 owners in total, it's had just 2 in 18 years. I have rebuilt it totally in my ownership. It has has inner and outer sills and rear wheel arches plus battery tray.

Everything I could buy was bought new, everything else was refurbished. The engine was rebuilt with new pistons, rings, head gasket, timing belt, turbo etc etc. The gearbox was sent away and was refurbished, and refitted with a new clutch and flywheel.

Probably wants a tiny bit of TLC to make perfect, but the fact there are zero rust issues will more than make up for a little bit of tinkering! Cars can be reserved from £200, and we accept BACS, all major credit/debit cards, cash or finance options are available if required. Please ring to check availability - also not all cars are kept onsite.

Viewing by appointment only - car is in storage. Ford Escort RS Turbo. 1987. 1.6 Petrol. Manual. 26,571 Miles.

We are located in Goole, East Yorkshire, DN14 5BS. Easy access from M62, Junction 36. Phone Mat on 01405 780935 or 07753 959899.

About the Ford Escort

The Ford Escort holds legendary status in the UK automotive landscape, renowned as a true workhorse, family favourite, and rally icon across its multiple generations. From its humble beginnings in the late 1960s to its eventual replacement by the Focus, the Escort evolved to meet changing demands while retaining its core appeal of affordability, simple mechanics, and widespread availability. It appeals to a broad spectrum of buyers today, from classic car enthusiasts seeking a nostalgic project or investment, to those looking for a characterful and relatively inexpensive retro daily driver. Its reputation is cemented as one of Britain's most popular and enduring cars.

Why Buy a Used Ford Escort?

  • Affordable Classic Ownership: Many Escort generations offer a highly accessible entry point into classic car ownership, with a strong community and parts support.
  • Simple Mechanics: Renowned for their straightforward engineering, Escorts are often easier and more cost-effective to maintain for the home mechanic or specialist.
  • Distinctive Retro Charm: Whether it’s the '70s swagger of a Mk2 or the '80s hot hatch cool of an XR3i, the Escort offers unique character missing from modern cars.
  • Strong Enthusiast Following: A vibrant community means a wealth of knowledge, advice, and readily available parts, making ownership more enjoyable and less daunting.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • Pre-1985 (Mk1, Mk2, early Mk3): £5,000 – £25,000 — These cover the earliest, more sought-after generations, often bought for restoration or as a nostalgic classic driver, excluding high-performance models.
  • 1985–1995 (Mk3, Mk4, early Mk5): £2,000 – £12,000 — This period includes popular '80s and early '90s models, offering a blend of retro charm and more practical driving, with performance variants fetching higher sums.
  • 1995–2000 (Late Mk5, Mk6): £1,000 – £6,000 — The final generations, more modern in feel but still accessible, perfect for a budget-friendly retro daily or project car.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: A notorious weak point across all generations, check sills, wheel arches, boot floor, bulkhead, and strut tops thoroughly.
  • Engine Oil Leaks/Wear: Particularly on older, higher-mileage examples, check for oil leaks from the rocker cover, sump, and crankshaft seals.
  • Suspension Bushes and Shocks: Worn bushes can lead to vague handling and knocking noises; shock absorbers may be tired, affecting ride quality.
  • Electrical Gremlins: On older models, check all lights, wipers, heating, and electric windows for intermittent faults or complete failure.
  • Interior Wear: Check for torn seats, cracked dashboards, and missing trim, as plastics and fabrics degrade with age and sun exposure.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Typically 25-40 mpg, depending heavily on the engine size (e.g., 1.3L to 2.0L) and specific generation.
  • Insurance Group: Varies significantly by specific model and engine; many Escorts benefit from specialist classic car insurance, which can offer competitive rates depending on usage and declared value.
  • Servicing: Generally straightforward and inexpensive, with excellent parts availability from both Ford specialists and classic car suppliers.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Mk1/Mk2 (1968-1980): Ideal for the pure classic car enthusiast or those seeking a piece of rally history; expect to pay a premium for good examples.
  • Mk3 XR3i (1982-1986): The quintessential '80s hot hatch, perfect for those wanting accessible performance, retro style, and a lively driving experience.
  • Mk4 Ghia (1986-1990): Offers a more comfortable and well-appointed retro daily driver experience, often with power steering and better trim levels.
  • Mk5 RS2000 (1991-1996): A capable and fun 90s performance car, offering a great blend of speed, practicality, and an emerging classic status.
  • Mk6 Estate (1995-2000): A practical and often overlooked option for those needing space and a reliable, budget-friendly retro vehicle.
