Why Buy a Used Austin-Healey?

  • Timeless Style: Austin-Healeys boast truly iconic designs, from the 'Frogeye' Sprite's unique charm to the elegant and muscular lines of the 'Big Healeys', ensuring they always turn heads.
  • Engaging Driving Experience: With their direct steering, rear-wheel drive, and characteristic engine notes, these cars offer a raw, unfiltered driving pleasure that is increasingly rare in modern vehicles.
  • Strong Club Support & Parts Availability: A thriving network of owners' clubs, specialist mechanics, and parts suppliers ensures that owning and maintaining an Austin-Healey remains a manageable and rewarding endeavour.
  • Potential Investment: Well-maintained and original Austin-Healeys, particularly the rarer models, have historically shown strong value retention and appreciation, making them a tangible asset as well as a pleasure to own.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1958–1971 (Austin-Healey Sprite): £15,000 – £35,000 — Often representing the most accessible entry into Austin-Healey ownership, these offer pure, unadulterated classic sports car fun, though condition can vary wildly.
  • 1959–1967 (Austin-Healey 3000 MkI/II): £40,000 – £65,000 — A good driver-quality 'Big Healey' that delivers significant road presence and performance, perfect for touring or spirited weekend drives.
  • 1953–1967 (Pristine 3000 MkIII or Austin-Healey 100): £70,000 – £150,000 — For top-tier, fully restored examples of the '3000' or the highly sought-after earlier '100' models, representing the pinnacle of Austin-Healey collecting.

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust: Thoroughly inspect sills, floor pans, chassis outriggers, boot floor, and wheel arches, as rust is a primary enemy of these steel-bodied classics.
  • Electrical System: Being a classic British car, check all electrical components (lights, gauges, wipers) for correct operation, as Lucas electrics can be temperamental.
  • Oil Leaks: Expect some weeping, but significant oil leaks from the engine or gearbox can indicate worn seals or gaskets.
  • Carburation & Fuel System: Issues with the SU carburettors (running rich/lean, poor idle) or fuel pump can affect performance.
  • Suspension & Steering Play: Check for excessive play in the steering box, worn kingpins, or perished suspension bushes, which affect handling and MOT compliance.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: Typically ranges from 20-30 mpg for Sprites and 18-25 mpg for 3000s, depending on driving style and tune.
  • Insurance Group: Not applicable in the traditional sense; requires specialist classic car insurance, often with agreed value and mileage limits.
  • Servicing: Best handled by classic car specialists or an enthusiastic DIY mechanic; parts availability is generally very good, but labour costs can be higher than for modern cars.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • Austin-Healey Sprite MkI ('Frogeye'): Ideal for those seeking the most distinctive and charming classic, known for its unique 'headlamp-up' styling and pure, unpretentious driving experience.
  • Austin-Healey Sprite MkII-IV: A more conventional, yet still hugely fun, two-seater roadster. Perfect for those wanting classic sports car thrills without the 'Frogeye' premium, sharing many parts with the MG Midget.
  • Austin-Healey 3000 MkI/II (BN7/BT7): Suited for purists who value the early 'Big Healey' aesthetic and more raw driving feel, often available in 2-seater (BN7) or 2+2 (BT7) configurations.
  • Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII (BJ8): The most refined and powerful of the 'Big Healeys', offering creature comforts like wind-up windows and improved interior, making it excellent for touring while retaining classic charm.
  • Austin-Healey 100 (BN1/BN2): For the serious collector or enthusiast, these early models are rarer, more valuable, and offer a truly historic connection to the brand's origins.
