About the Yamaha Xsr900
The Yamaha XSR900 is a modern classic that harks back to the golden era of motorcycles while packing cutting-edge technology. It's a head-turner for sure, but is it the right bike for you? This guide will help you decide.
Why Buy the Yamaha XSR900?
The XSR900 is all about style and substance. Its retro-inspired looks, with a minimalist aluminium frame, teardrop tank, and round LED headlight, are simply stunning. But beneath that classic exterior lies Yamaha's potent 890cc CP3 inline-triple engine. This motor is renowned for its characterful delivery, offering a thrilling surge of power and torque across the rev range. It makes for an incredibly engaging and fun riding experience, whether you're commuting, blasting down country lanes, or heading out for a weekend adventure. The riding position is upright and comfortable, making it versatile enough for daily use. Throw in a suite of modern electronics, including lean-sensitive traction control and ABS, and it's a bike that doesn't just look good, it performs brilliantly too.

Common Issues
The XSR900 is generally a very reliable motorcycle. However, like any machine, there are a few minor points to be aware of:
- First Generation (2016-2021): Some owners reported occasional minor electrical gremlins, though these were uncommon. Clutch feel could be a little heavy for some.
- Second Generation (2022 onwards): Generally very few complaints. Ensure all software updates have been carried out.
- General: Check for any accidental damage, especially to the stylish aluminium bodywork. Ensure the service history is up to date.
Running Costs
The XSR900 offers reasonable running costs for its performance class:
- Fuel Economy: Expect around 45-55 mpg depending on riding style.
- Insurance: Group 12-14, depending on age and rider profile. Get quotes specific to your details.
- Servicing: Minor services are typically £150-£250, with major services costing more, especially valve clearance checks.
- Tyres: A set of quality tyres will cost roughly £250-£350 fitted.
- Tax: Varies based on emissions and registration date, but generally in line with other bikes of this engine size.
Variants
The XSR900 has been available in a few different colour schemes over the years, but there aren't significant mechanical variants in terms of performance. The main evolution occurred in 2022 with a significant update to the chassis, engine, and electronics, leading to the second-generation model. Previous generations are often referred to by their colour year, for instance, the 'Iconic Performance' or 'Garage Metal' versions.
