About the Triumph Tiger 1200
The Triumph Tiger 1200 has long been a stalwart of the adventure touring segment, offering a potent blend of off-road capability and long-distance comfort. For 2022, the Tiger 1200 underwent a significant overhaul, shedding weight and gaining a more potent engine, making it a compelling proposition for riders looking to tackle everything from cross-continental journeys to challenging green laning. This guide will help you navigate the used market and understand what to expect when buying a Triumph Tiger 1200 in the UK.
Why Buy?
The Triumph Tiger 1200 is designed for the serious adventurer. Its powerful three-cylinder engine delivers ample torque and horsepower, perfect for overtaking on motorways or tackling steep inclines. The ergonomics are generally comfortable for extended periods in the saddle, and the sophisticated electronics suite enhances both safety and rider experience. With its impressive fuel range and robust build quality, it’s a true globetrotter. The latest generation has also benefited from a significant weight reduction, making it far more manageable off-road and at low speeds.

Common Issues
While Triumph generally produces reliable motorcycles, some common points to consider when buying a used Tiger 1200 include:
- Shaft Drive: Ensure the shaft drive is well-maintained. Look for any signs of wear, stiffness, or leaks. Regular servicing is crucial.
- Electrical Gremlins: Older models, particularly, can sometimes suffer from minor electrical issues. Test all lights, indicators, and the dashboard functions thoroughly.
- Heated Grips/Seats: Check that these are working correctly, especially on pre-2022 models where they were often optional extras.
- Clutch Slave Cylinder: Some earlier models had a recall for the clutch slave cylinder. Check if this has been addressed.
- Paintwork/Finish: Being an adventure bike, some may have seen off-road use. Inspect bodywork for scratches or damage, and check the overall finish.
Running Costs
The Tiger 1200 is a large-capacity motorcycle, so expect running costs commensurate with its size:
- Fuel Economy: Typically averages around 45-55 mpg, depending on riding style and touring load.
- Insurance: Group 15-17, expect premiums to be higher due to its size and performance.
- Servicing: Major services are recommended every 10,000 miles. Main dealer servicing can be costly, but independent specialists are often available.
- Tyres: Adventure touring tyres will need replacing every 5,000-8,000 miles depending on riding conditions.
- Road Tax: Based on CO2 emissions, figures vary annually but are generally in the mid-to-higher bracket.
Variants
The Tiger 1200 range has evolved:
- Pre-2018: Known as the Tiger Explorer. Available in various trims.
- 2018-2021: Split into XR (road-focused) and XC (off-road biased) lines, with further sub-variants like XRx, XCx, XRt, and XCa offering different levels of equipment.
- 2022 onwards: The line-up is streamlined into two core families:
- GT: Road-focused, available in GT and GT Pro.
- Rally: Off-road focused, with spoked wheels, longer travel suspension, available in Rally Explorer and Rally Pro.
The choice between GT and Rally depends heavily on your intended use. The Rally models are more capable off-road, while the GT variants offer a more refined on-road experience.
