About the Kawasaki W800

Why Buy a Kawasaki W800?

The Kawasaki W800 is a modern motorcycle with a distinctly retro soul. If you're drawn to the classic styling of British bikes from the 1960s and 70s, but crave the reliability and engineering of a contemporary machine, the W800 is a compelling proposition. Its air-cooled, vertical-twin engine, encased in a beautiful bevel-gear driven cam, is a visual and auditory treat. The classic teardrop tank, spoked wheels, and chrome detailing all contribute to an undeniable aesthetic appeal. It’s a bike that feels substantial and well-built, exuding a sense of quality and craftsmanship often missing in more modern, mass-produced machines.

On the road, the W800 offers a relaxed and engaging riding experience. It’s not about blistering speed or cutting-edge technology; instead, it prioritises feel and involvement. The engine delivers a pleasing amount of torque, making for effortless cruising and enjoyable acceleration through the gears. Handling is predictable and confidence-inspiring, perfect for leisurely weekend rides, commuting, or even venturing out on longer tours. The W800 appeals to seasoned riders looking for a simpler, more characterful machine, as well as newer riders who appreciate its approachable nature and classic looks.

Common Issues

The W800 is generally a very reliable motorcycle. Its simple, air-cooled engine design means there are fewer complex components to go wrong. However, some minor points to check on used models include:

  • Exhaust Rust: The classic chrome exhausts can be prone to rust, especially on older or poorly maintained examples. Check for pitting and bubbling paintwork.
  • Cosmetic Wear: As with any retro-styled bike, check for general wear and tear on chrome components, paintwork, and seat fabric.
  • Chain and Sprockets: Regular maintenance is key. Look for signs of a worn chain and sprockets, which would require replacement.
  • Tyres: Ensure tyres have plenty of tread remaining, as they can be an unexpected expense.

Running Costs

Running a W800 is generally affordable. Its fuel efficiency is respectable, typically returning around 50-55 mpg depending on riding style. Insurance costs will vary based on rider experience, location, and the specific W800 model, but it's unlikely to be excessively high for compliant riders. Servicing is straightforward due to the engine's simplicity, and parts are readily available. Road tax will depend on the vehicle's emissions class and age.

Variants

The W800 has seen a few variations over its production life:

  • W800: The original, classic model often featuring more chrome and a traditional upright riding position.
  • W800 Street: Introduced in 2019, this variant typically features blacked-out components, a black headlight cowl, and often higher handlebars for a more relaxed, urban feel.
  • W800 Cafe: Also introduced in 2019, this version sports a distinctive cafe racer fairing, clip-on handlebars, and a hump seat for a sportier, retro aesthetic.

All variants share the same fundamental engine and chassis, with differences primarily in styling, ergonomics, and minor colour/trim options.
