About the Honda Vfr750

The Honda VFR750 is an iconic sport-touring motorcycle renowned for its legendary V4 engine, superb build quality, and versatile performance. Launched in various iterations from the mid-1980s until 1997, it quickly established a reputation for being a supremely capable and reliable machine, equally at home commuting, carving B-roads, or undertaking long-distance tours. In the UK market, the VFR750 (particularly the RC36 generations with their distinctive single-sided swingarm) is highly regarded by experienced riders for its smooth power delivery, comfortable ergonomics, and impressive longevity, making it a beloved choice for those seeking a practical yet engaging classic.

Why Buy a Used Honda VFR750?

  • Legendary Honda Reliability: These bikes are known for their exceptional durability and mechanical robustness, often accumulating high mileages with proper care.
  • Smooth V4 Engine Character: The 748cc V4 engine offers a unique blend of tractable low-end torque and exhilarating top-end power, with a distinctive and appealing exhaust note.
  • Comfortable Sport-Touring Ergonomics: Designed for versatility, the VFR750 provides a balanced riding position that’s comfortable for extended journeys without sacrificing sporty handling.
  • Excellent Value for Money: For a bike with such a rich heritage, advanced engineering for its era, and enduring capability, used VFR750s offer fantastic performance per pound.

Typical Price Range

All prices are approximate and subject to change based on condition, mileage, specification, and market conditions.

  • 1990–1993 (RC36 I): £2,000 – £3,500 — These early single-sided swingarm models offer classic VFR characteristics at an accessible price point, often needing some cosmetic attention.
  • 1994–1997 (RC36 II): £2,800 – £4,800 — The final and most refined 750cc generation, featuring updated styling and ergonomics, providing excellent performance and comfort.
  • Pristine or Low-Mileage Examples: £4,500 – £7,000 — Exceptionally well-preserved or very low-mileage late-model VFR750s, often sought after by collectors or enthusiasts looking for a near-showroom condition classic.

Common Issues to Check

  • Regulator/Rectifier Failure: A known weakness across many older Hondas; check for consistent charging voltage and battery health.
  • Exhaust Collector Box Corrosion: The mild steel collector box under the engine is prone to rust, potentially leading to exhaust leaks.
  • Cam Chain Tensioners: Listen for rattles, particularly on start-up or at idle, which could indicate worn cam chain tensioners.
  • Suspension Condition: Check for weeping fork seals, excessive play in the linkages, and a tired or bouncy rear shock, as these components will show wear with age.
  • Wiring Loom Integrity: Inspect the main wiring loom for any signs of chafing, corrosion, or previous amateur repairs, especially near the headstock and under the tank.

Running Costs

  • Fuel Economy: 40–50 mpg (depending on riding style and model year).
  • Insurance Group: Group 13 (approximate, varies with insurer and rider history).
  • Servicing: Generally straightforward for routine maintenance, though access to the V4 engine for major services can be more involved. Parts are still widely available.

Which Variant Should I Choose?

  • VFR750F (RC24, 1986–1989): The original VFR750, featuring a conventional twin-sided swingarm. It offers a classic '80s sportsbike feel with the legendary V4 engine, ideal for riders seeking an earlier, more raw experience.
  • VFR750F (RC36 I, 1990–1993): The first generation with the iconic single-sided swingarm, bringing modern styling and improved chassis dynamics. This variant strikes an excellent balance between classic charm and enhanced sport-touring capability.
  • VFR750F (RC36 II, 1994–1997): The final and arguably most refined 750cc model, boasting updated aerodynamics, revised ergonomics, and a slightly lighter frame. It's the ultimate iteration of the VFR750 for those desiring the peak of its development before the 800cc VFR took over.
