What to Look For When Buying Used
Given its track pedigree, thorough inspection is crucial:
- Service History: A full BMW Motorrad service history (FBMWSH) is non-negotiable. Service intervals are typically 6,000 miles or annually.
- Engine: Listen for unusual noises. Check for oil leaks around the head gasket and sump. Track use can be hard on engines; ensure regular oil changes are documented.
- Downtime Indicators: Look for scuffs on fairings, bar ends, exhaust, and engine casings. While some track-day scuffs might be cosmetic, significant damage suggests a crash. Check frame sliders – if present, they might have done their job protecting other parts.
- Brakes & Suspension: The M 1000 RR features M Brakes. Check disc wear, pad life, and for any warping. Ensure the M-specific Marzocchi forks and rear shock respond smoothly and have no leaks.
- Electronics: Test all riding modes, TFT display functionality, and the quickshifter. Any warning lights should be investigated.
- M Competition Package: Many M 1000 RRs will have this. Verify all components are present: M carbon wheels, M milled parts, M endurance chain plus more.
- Common Faults: While generally robust, some S 1000 RR-derived models have experienced issues with the quickshifter sensor or occasional electrical gremlins. Check for these during a test ride.
Running Costs & Insurance
- Typical Insurance Group: Expect to be in the highest insurance groups, typically Group 17 (out of 17) or 100% (out of 100%). Premiums will be substantial.
- Fuel Economy: Given its performance, expect around 35-40 mpg on mixed riding, significantly less on track.
- Servicing Costs: BMW main dealer servicing is premium. Minor services range from £250-£400, major services (with valve checks) can exceed £800-£1,200.
- ULEZ: Euro 5 compliant, so it is ULEZ exempt in London and other UK clean air zones.
- Tyres: Expect to go through premium supersport tyres quickly, especially with track use.
Is the BMW M 1000 RR Right For You?
The M 1000 RR is designed for the experienced rider who prioritises absolute performance, track capability, and exclusivity. It's a no-compromise machine for those seeking the ultimate supersport experience. It is not a comfortable commuter or a beginner's bike.
Alternatives to Consider:
- BMW S 1000 RR: A fantastic bike offering 95% of the M's performance at a lower price point.
- Ducati Panigale V4/V4 S: Italian exoticism with a V4 engine and blistering performance.
- Kawasaki ZX-10RR: Another homologation special with a strong racing pedigree.
- Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP: Honda's competitive entry into the top-tier supersport class.
